I COME TO LATVERIA BEARING THE END OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR, AND ALSO, MORE GENERALLY, CHRISTMAS TIDINGS OF GOOD WILL TOWARDS MAN, SO LONG AS THAT MAN IS NOT REED RICHARDS OR ANY OF HIS CLOSE ASSOCIATES.
First comic haul in awhile. Much more expensive than if I just caught up with these series via ebay, but I just chalk up the extra cost to enjoying the banter of the people in the comic shop. And honestly, unless you’re getting a whole run of something that’s hard to find (*cough*, New X-Men, *cough*) the feeling of getting comics in he mail has got to be pretty meh.
Anyway, I wanted to come up to date with these series (Uncanny X-Men and Wolverine and the X-Men) prior to Marvel Now! but I did not have sufficient munnies to do this in time. I still have AvX to look forward to in both series, as well as the crossover stories themselves, and probably New Avengers. And, once Marvel Now! hits (in less than 2 weeks !@#$#@%*@#$) you know I’m getting those J. Scott Campbell connecting covers, and I’ll probably end up reading all three series (Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, and All-New X-Men).
So yeah. I has reading to do.
Oh yeah, and the issue #0’s are because fuck you.
But seriously, I just wanted a peek at some New 52 stuff and, let’s face it, that Flash cover is sex. I originally got into comics because of the New 52, but ended up enjoying my foray into Marvel much more because, quite frankly, the world was presented much… well, better, even in spite of the fact that I literally had no idea what the fuck was going on when I started reading at Schism.
So yeah. Giving DC another chance briefly. I loves me some Batman and I’m interested in getting to know Mr. Flash but, I don’t know man, the X-Bros just all have my heart right now.
And this is what I bought today!
I highly recommend Tellos to anybody interested in Lord of the Rings-esque style fantasy. The writing is really solid and it was penciled by the late great Mike Wieringo (and the art really is absolutely gorgeous).
And X-Men 90’s nostalgia totally got the best of me, but can you blame me with those covers?
They’re here! They’re here! So pretty!
If anybody can point me to Issue #40 of this series (New X-Men 2004) I will literally find you and make you dinner.
This was a terrible idea for a hobby. And by terrible, I mean awesome for me, and terrible for my wallet.
Since I just got into comics, and because I’m curious all the time anyway, I decided to look more into the guy, pretty much only knowing based on Chris’s posts that Wieringo drew The Flash.
Then, on his Wikipedia page, I saw it: Tellos.
What a weird frigging world.
I was never into comics, but there was this fairly hyped visit to my local library when I was a kid, probably 9 or 10. Of course, nothing happens at libraries anymore, especially tiny unused ones like the one in my town. But some semi-famous or famous (not sure how exactly it was hyped) comic book person was going to be at the library. My mom suggested we go, I don’t remember exactly why, and it was quite random considering I quite literally didn’t own a single comic.
I don’t remember if Wieringo was there, but I do remember Tellos, and I distinctly remember the blue line sketch cover copy of issue #3 that I got, and I remembered that it was signed by somebody. After digging through my attic (including coming across my high school yearbooks for the first time in years, that was a weird emotional experience), I found it: signed by Todd Dezago, the writing half of the fairly well known (though not by me at the age of 10) Dezago/Wieringo duo.
Turns out, independent of Wierengo, Dezago practically came up with Young Justice. Pretty cool. I also found a copy of the Tellos Prologue, along with a couple of Star Trek comics (must have been my dad’s or something?) and an Amazing Spider-Man reprinting (with an updated cover done by, you guessed it, ‘Ringo himself).
Anyway, I just thought that Tellos thing was pretty cool, to be connected to that guy in such a weird way even though that was my only exposure to comics in the first 20 years of my life. It also gives me something else to collect.
What an odd day.
First haul of comic books ever. I’m super excited about Justice League (even though it’s going to force me to read not just Batman but Action Comics and maybe even Green Lantern Corps. and The Flash), and Schism has been great so far and I’m super super excited to start following the X-men. And Bad Planet is good times. As is New X-men. Woo!
This is brilliant.
